With a powerful engine, sporty detailing and an involving driving experience, the recently revised model is now more appealing than ever. However, the changes to the exterior are hard to spot. Look closely and you’ll notice the tweaked front end, but otherwise the sporty, well proportioned shape stays the same. The Altea’s kerbside appeal is further enhanced by stylish 17-inch alloys and swooping character lines in the flank, while a final design flourish is added by the clever SEAT badge that doubles as the boot release.Inside, the racy theme continues. Up front is a pair of supportive bucket seats, while the driver gets a chunky three-spoke steering wheel and cowled dials. The facelift brings improved plastics and classy-looking new controls for the air-con and the stereo. None of the changes impacts on the Altea’s practicality, though – and that means occupants in the back get plenty of leg and headroom. But the small windows and dark upholstery are quite gloomy. With the back seats in place the boot is the smallest, at 409 litres, although the rear bench slides, allowing you to increase luggage capacity. The SEAT’s flexibility is dented slightly by the fact it uses a traditional 60/40 split rear seat – the Scenic and C4 feature three individual chairs. But there’s plenty of storage space in the cabin. Specify the £320 ceiling-mounted DVD screen, and matters are improved further by the inclusion of aircraft-style overhead lockers. At the test track, the Altea was the clear star of our quartet, thanks to its muscular 168bhp 2.0-litre diesel. It raced from 0-60mph in 9.9 seconds – a full 2.5 seconds faster than the Citroen and Renault. Even more impressive was its in-gear punch – the 350Nm torque output translates into strong overtaking pace. The SEAT covered 30-50mph in third gear in only 3.3 seconds. It’s just a pity that the gruff TDI soundtrack takes the edge off this excellent display.On the road, the SEAT is as sporty as it looks. There’s lots of grip and the stiff suspension controls body movement well in corners. The downside is a firm ride that leaves the Altea trailing its rivals for comfort. Thick A-pillars also impair forward vision, occasionally making the car difficult to place on the road.But the SEAT’s most arresting feature is its bargain price. At £18,540, it’s £255 less than the Citroen, and yet comes with more space and kit. For buyers wanting family car practicality mixed with hot hatch pace and fun, the Spanish car makes a lot of sense. No, it's SEAT's new Altea, a sporty mini-MPV that the Spanish firm has declared is the world's first Multi Sport Vehicle, or MSV. The unusual five-door machine is designed to mix its sporting character and handling with an airy, practical cabin. It's hard to get a grasp of the concept from pictures alone, but imagine a Honda Jazz that's been pumped up by 50 per cent, and you've pretty much got it. Interior space is excellent, and there's a commanding, easily adjustable position from an excellent, high-back seat for the driver. In the rear, occupants have plenty of knee and shoulder room, as well as masses of foot space under the front seats. There's excellent access through the big door openings, and although the rear seats are not removable, they flip and fold into the footwells. Add the boot's raised floor, which makes room for a generous hidden loadspace, and the result is a completely flat loadbay. Finally, SEAT's designers have included two parcel shelves, one of which is hollow for handy oddment storage. SEAT claims top-level safety for its new model, which is based on the new VW Golf chassis. All versions have six airbags (front, side and curtain) plus ABS, ESP and traction control. The base Reference model gets air-con, tinted glass, chunky 16-inch wheels and a six-speaker CD tuner with a multichanger in the central armrest. For the plusher Stylance trim, alloy wheels, climate and cruise controls, plus a trip computer, are added. Offering an even racier feel, the Sport spec features 16-inch alloys, uprated suspension and superbly designed sports seats. Topping the range is the Sport Up, which combines the Sport and Stylance trims and adds a distinctive bodykit. Four engines will be made available from launch - 102bhp 1.6 and 140bhp 2.0-litre FSI petrol units, as well as 105bhp 1.9 and 140bhp 2.0-litre diesels. The smaller engines get a five-speed manual gearbox, while the 2.0-litre versions have six-speed transmissions. There is also the option of SEAT's excellent six-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox on the 2.0-litre TDI, and it was this engine, albeit mated to a six-speed manual, which we drove first on the roads around Barcelona. It had plenty of urge and felt decently refined on the motorway, but the powerplant was unacceptably noisy when pressed. With only 1,200 miles on the clock, the unit was very tight, so perhaps that was to be expected. Even so, a senior SEAT engineer confessed that Volks-wagen's PD offerings were noisier than rival Peugeot diesels. The less powerful 1.9-litre's refinement is a better bet, but it can't match the 2.0-litre's superior emissions figures. In contrast, the base 1.6 petrol model is beautifully quiet. Unfortunately, it is also virtually gutless. Indeed, Seat sources admit it just isn't powerful enough when the car is fully loaded. As a result, the torquey 2.0-litre FSI powerplant is our choice. But that's the bad news over. The rest of the Altea is first-rate. It has a sporting but supple ride, accurate and direct steering - even though it's a little light - and excellent brakes. It's also extremely manoeuvrable with a tight turning circle. And despite being tall, the Altea corners with very little roll. If you think you've entered a corner too quickly, stay on the power and it carves through confidently. Who will buy it, though? Anyone after a sporty family car who finds models like the VW Golf too small should take a look. The Altea will appeal greatly at the school gates, suiting young parents who don't like the style of a conventional mini-MPV. But I liked this car, so would be brave. We were quite confident we would be buying a petrol car, so took that out. Had a quite nice drive for 20 minutes, then back to garage. The sales man then said, try the diesel, so we took that out. It was fantastic. Very keen, very smooth gear changes, nippy. Loved it. It was just as powerful as the 2.0Lt petrol. Went back to the garage, Husband quite impressed with me for liking his 1st choice and the fact I drove it! Went to another couple of dealerships to look at the other cars in the shortlist. The New Leon FR shares similar styling to the concept Leon, deeper bigger front valance, deep rear valance with black rear diffuser, not to mention the twin chrome exhaust, and exclusive 17" alloys with the option of 18" (designed for the New Cupra) alloys. For power Seat has chose the 2.0 FSI turbo sourced from the VW Golf GTI and the new 2.0 TDI 170 which debuted in the Altea FR. So now you can buy a cheaper version of the Golf GTI and there is a diesel version too, cool or what? Well not quite. Advantages: Size, running costs, Motorway muncherDisadvantages: Not ideal for Town Driving. Not for 5 large adults. Been driving a 2.0TDI SE for the best part of 2 years. I have done about 60,000 miles in the car and have had very few complaints, so lets get them out of the way first. The steering can feel a tad light at high motorway speeds if you are not carrying a lot of weight. The sensitivity of the steering wheel can lead you to contsantly adjust your steering wheel slightly every few seconds. You can however get this adjusted at your dealer (it has six settings). So this is easily fixed. Secondly the button handbrake can take a little getting used to, especially if you do a lot of motorway miles and rarely use it. But thats just because it is a new system, not one that is faulty. Now onto the good points. Cruise control is fantastic. Pull the level to turn on at your current speed. Tap up for 5 more mph and tap down for 5 less mph ...
