As with the León and Altea FRs, the Ibiza comes with a choice of petrol or diesel engines, but not quite the same ones. The larger, more recently designed models have modern two-litre turbocharged units, whereas the Ibiza gets engines from the Volkswagen Group's classic collection. In the case of the diesel, that means the ageing but still impressive 1.9 TDI, which makes the Ibiza nearly £1200 more than the car tested here (though it also means cheaper insurance - the TDI comes four Groups lower). The entry-level FR gets the 1.8-litre petrol turbo which has been appearing in SEATs, Volkswagens, Audis and Skodas since the reign of Edward the Confessor. And why not? It's a good unit. The fact that it must also have paid for itself years ago, and the other fact that the Ibiza has itself been around for a long time, means the car can be priced just under £12,000. For that money the Ibiza FR provides impressive performance, with a top speed of 134mph and a 0-62mph time of 8.4 seconds. There are much hotter hatches around, but they all cost more. The Ibiza could be quicker than it is. The 1.8 Turbo engine has been made available over the years with a wide variety of power outputs, from 148bhp (in its original form) to 247bhp in the Audi TT. In the Ibiza FR, it comes in 148bhp spec, which is about as much as the car can reasonably handle. The Ibiza feels like what it actually is - a car whose heritage stretches back for more than a decade - and if it had a lot more grunt going through the front wheels it could start to feel pretty wayward. Advantages: fast, stunning performance, lively engine, spacious, high spec. Disadvantages: none really ..too new to tell (high insurance-Gp. 15) ...really considered Spanish car manufacturer SEAT till now. After reading many motoring reviews praising the new SEAT Leon, I decided to book a test drive for a whole weekend. However, upon arrival at SEAT dealership, a rather tempting Seat Toledo caught my eye so I test drove that instead. I was disappointed by the Toldeo's performance (1.820V) and price tag (£14,495) so I moved further a field looking at Seat’s other models. ......of my dream car; the Seat IBIZA Cupra 1.820v turbo!! Just to get you in the picture here… the field is comparable to Golf Gti, Renault Clio sport RSI or 172, Peugeot 206Gti, we are talking small, fast hot cars. The 1.8 Litre turbo ... more After ending my partnership with my beloved Italian beast alfa romeo..I have spent the last 2 months searching for a new partner to fill my heart with joy and take me to unknown levels of excitement.I lost my previous car in an accident recently after 5 years of trouble free driving and have desperately been searching high and low for a replacement. I had never really considered Spanish car manufacturer SEAT till now. By this time the Leon was not available for a test drive. It was also apparent by this time that in order to get a decent specification level in the Leon it’d have to be the 1.820VSE which produces 125bhp with a price of £13,745. This was not quite the performance I was after. So I looked further a field.Unknown to me at the time I was standing in front of my dream car; the Seat IBIZA Cupra 1.820v turbo!! I am not normally attracted to small cars, after driving a medium sized 5d family hatchback for 5 years+. Just to get you in the picture here… the field is comparable to Golf Gti, Renault Clio sport RSI or 172, Peugeot 206Gti, we are talking small, fast hot cars.SEAT IBIZA Cupra----------------All new Seats are powered by VW powered engines. The 1.8 Litre turbo charged 20 valve unit is the latest new Ibiza released in Uk in March 2001. On first appearances it looks fresh, bold with body coloured contoured side skirts, bumpers and mirrors. There is a bold S badge on front and back as on all the new Seat range. The new Ibiza cupra has a set of 16” alloy wheels, twin exhaust, a honeycomb front grille with rounded front fog lights these features differentiate it from the other Ibiza’s!Interior-------Although this is only a 3 door it is unbelievably spacious. Everything is beautifully laid out. The dashboard provides a clear display of panels through the 3 spoke leather steering wheel, with 2 large panels comprising a rev counter and digital speedometer. The dashboard and controls are clear, easy to read and funky, with the titanium coloured gear stick, and matching colour pedals. The seats are very comfortable in the recaro sports style with part leather upholstery. Now for the fun part:,The DRIVE and HANDLING AND PERFORMANCE------------------------------------------Seated comfortably in the ergonomically styled seats I took the Ibiza-Cupra for some serious bit of testing to lay some rubber on the tarmac!! One gentle touch of the accelerator and this thing just flies, taking corners so swiftly and grabbing every inch of tarmac. I was lucky enough to be able to endure many long and twisting country roads. The roar of that turbo charged unit just came into action with the rev meter flowing with the demand. Acceleration from 1st to 2nd is deceptively fast with plenty of power in 2nd to take you through the gears to 5th, with a 0-60 time of under 8 secs (7.9). I easily hit 90mph on a dual carriageway, opps! Gentle dab on the brakes and we were back cruising along at 70mph. Back at 30mph through the villages and the engine just purrs gently, just letting you know theres plenty of power there should you need, otherwise its as quiet as a mouse and well behaved. The ventilated brakes are superb, sensitive and more than adequate. The engine is responsive, lively with plenty of torque. You know this car has plenty in reserve should you need it. Road handling is simply outstanding. I was simply amazed at this car’s handling and performance with 3 adults onboard (that’s a estimated passenger weight of 210Kg and this car was flying, imagine with just one driver!)Specifications and Equipments levels:- (the serious bits)-----------------------------------The Ibiza Cupra is extremely well equipped with a MFA Computer which showed me my journey time, my average mile per gallon (mpg), mileage of journey. It will even draw you a graph over Mon-fri of your average journey mpg used e.g. For example you could calculate your average mpg daily on your route to work. Now will it give you a printout of this data or can you download it to your Pc? It’s smart but not that smart ..yet!! Still pretty pictures and buttons to play with if you are stuck in traffic! It is packed with safety features too, such as driver’s air bag, passenger’s airbag and front side air-bags as standard. As well as ABS it also an electronic differential system (EDS) and Traction control (TCS) as standard, only on this Cupra model. It also has climate control air conditioning (Autoclima), abs, electric windows, immobilisor and remote central locking. It doesn’t have a CD player (only a 6 speaker radio/cassette) but who’ll want to listen to CD’s when you have the beautiful high revving roar of that turbo unit for music!Cost of Ownership and Warranty------------------------------All Seat Ibiza's come with I year paintwork and 6 year anti-corrosion warranty.Service intervals are every 10,000 miles or 12 months with the first SEAT service costing £99. The next major service is at 20,000 miles costing £195.Insurance:-This car is placed in Group 15 Insurance, which is a bit high, but same as a Golf Gti.Cost:-The on the road price in Uk is £12,995 as purchased new at a dealer. However, I have seen internet deals for this model as low as £9995, but there is a waiting time for these of 9-12 weeks.Other choices:- (Non VW based) ----------------------------- Renault Clio sport RSI is only 1.6litre produces 110bhp, has similar specification level to Ibizi cupra, but lacks power and performance, a possible option at £11,980. The other Renault that will give the same level of performance and probably a lot more oomph and power would be the Renault Clio RenaultSport (172) in a 2.0L producing...you guessed it...172bhp! thats why its named the 172. However this is a much pricier option with a UK price tag £15,495.Conclusion----------Overall, this is a fast fully loaded car with a stunning specification and a performance to match. It certainly offers far better value for money than its latest [4th generation-1998 onwards] VW badged partner Golf Gti (1.8T which costs £18,000 producing only 15Obhp). A SEAT is £5000 cheaper with an extra 6 bhp and a high specification and performance to match. Depending on your requirements if you are interested in a spacious, yet fast high spec. car, this has to be a prime candidate! This car is new, therefore the Used car market is virtually non-existent. This is definitely a "strong contender on my present list" to replace my italian car. I have not bought this car as yet. I will be following the Used car market keenly to catch one of these, though I warn you if you are looking for one of these you will need to be fast as these new Ibiza Cupra’s are in demand! The best place to buy a competively priced Used Seat Ibiza cupra's would be at car supermarkets and internet car importers. You can also always ask your local SEAT dealer to inform you as soon as they get one.alas, it my infatuation with this stunning Spanish hot Cupra sport hatch continues, yet my love for the Italian cars never fades..and I'm leaning towards another Italian beast.... ...less Connoisseur_Haggler 22.04.2001 (20.05.2001) Ciao members have rated this car review on average: very helpful Review of SEAT Ibiza 1.8 20v T Value for Money Road Handling Comfort Features Fuel consumption Looks Mutton dressed as Lamb Advantages: Looks menacing in black, good entry level equipment, good mpg for performance.Disadvantages: Dealers ...BAD POINTS The Seat dealer forgot to tighten the wheel bolts causing damage to the front brake discs. The acceleration that the Volkswagen 1.8 20vt engine provides is very good and it can keep up with most other hot hatches that have been produced recentley, with it being a turbo it can easily be tuned to give an extra 30-40bhp as well if it's not quick enough for you. The handling of the car is fairly good ......can feel a bit loose at times, this can be rectified by fitting wheel spacers on the back of the car and makes it feel a lot more solid. I have had some small problems but nothing too serious, one of these was a coil pack failure which is a well known problem among these engines and the other is an air flow sensor failure which again is a well known problem. " Factsheet No Information available Running Costs SEAT’S Ibiza has never really had much of the limelight when it comes to hot hatches. For years, models such as the various Clio Renaultsports and the Ford Fiesta ST have dominated this sector, but SEAT is fighting back. In line with the Leon, Toledo and Altea ranges, there are now two sporting models heading the line-up – FR and Cupra. The FR (for Formula Racing) line is positioned just below the top-spec Cupra, and in the Ibiza it is available in either petrol or diesel engines. And the Ibiza has also been given a more sporting wardrobe in its recent revamp. A new front bumper has been added with ‘aggressive’ air intakes inspired by the Leon World Touring Car racer. The chrome twin exhausts have been made more visible, while a mock racing-style diffuser has been added to the rear bumper. Other touches include larger 17-inch alloys (up from 16s on the old model) and the Ibiza badge has been moved from the side to the middle of the rear hatch. However, the general impression of the Ibiza is little changed from the old version, and I still don’t think it is one of Seat’s best designs. Despite the new touches it still looks quite podgy and ill-proportioned, with the large sides making the wheels look too small. Still, you can’t see the car from the cockpit. Changes inside include the steering wheel being smeared with ‘titanium-style’ silver to accommodate the FR badge.Controls for the stereo are included, although they feel strangely unsatisfying to use, and vague to the touch. The six-speed manual gearbox is pretty run-of-the-mill – not outstandingly slick, but not bad either – although I couldn’t get comfortable with the chunky design of the gearknob, which didn’t sit well in my grip. The interior design of the dashboard and doors is uninspiring and the centre console and instrument binnacle is made from plastic that feels brittle and doesn’t look that special either. The sportified seats are good though, providing plenty of lateral support and they remain comfortable even on long journeys. Under the bonnet little has changed, with the same turbocharged 1.8-litre engine putting out 148bhp. This is good for 62mph from standstill in 8.4 seconds, which it does in a convincingly sporty manner. There’s decent pull from the off, and a meaty, rasping sound from the exhaust too. The handling is also pretty decent, with the speed-sensitive steering providing an acceptable level of feedback around B-roads and lightening up to allow you to nip easily around town. Despite the new touches, the Ibiza is essentially four years old – very mature in hot hatch terms. But although beginning to show its age, the Ibiza FR is a solidly decent hottish hatch. It may be no looker, but for around £12,000 it’s cheaper to buy than many of its rivals. The MINI is second but is severely hampered by a lack of power. With only 115bhp it lags behind the rest of the group. The Colt costs another £600 and boasts 147bhp and part-leather upholstery as standard. The Fiesta also boasts 148bhp but is the most expensive at £1,500 more than the Seat. SMR costs MINI 2.00ppm Mitsubishi 2.75ppm Ford 2.87ppm SEAT 2.91ppm THE Mini comes out on top here, although the 2ppm figure quoted here includes the optional TLC servicing package. With that, the Cooper is likely to cost £1,200 to service and maintain over a three-year/60,000-mile fleet cycle. Over the same period the Colt will cost £1,650, while the Fiesta ST will demand £1,722. The Ibiza is the most expensive to keep on the road. Expect it to produce bills totalling £1,746 over its life. Fuel costs Mitsubishi 10.35ppm MINI 10.50ppm Ford 11.24ppm SEAT 11.99ppm THE Colt is the least thirsty of the quartet, with a claimed combined fuel economy figure of 41.5mpg, or 10.35ppm. This equates to a petrol bill of £6,210 over 60,000 miles. The MINI, which returns a claimed 40.9mpg, will drink £6,300-worth of unleaded. Both the Fiesta and Ibiza with their larger engines lag behind. The Ford returns 38.2mpg and will guzzle £6,744-worth of petrol, while the Seat will cost £7,194 thanks to average fuel economy of 35.8mpg. Depreciation costs MINI 10.47ppm SEAT 12.20ppm Ford 13.84ppm Mitsubishi 14.56ppm MINIS have had considerable appeal and strong residuals since launch, and the Cooper is no exception. CAP estimates it will hold on to 48% of its value after three years/60,000 miles, meaning a loss over that time of £6,282. The Ibiza also looks likely to depreciate less than its rivals, retaining 37% and losing £7,320, while the Fiesta (39%) will shed £8,304. The Colt is not expected to fare well in the residuals battle. Its RV of 32% means it will lose £8,736 over its fleet life. Wholelife costs MINI 22.97ppm SEAT 27.10ppm Mitsubishi 27.66ppm Ford 27.95ppm THE Mini is by far the cheapest to run on 22.97ppm, but its bid to be the choice of hot hatches is hindered by its performance. The remaining three are all closely matched, with the Ibiza the least expensive on 27.10ppm. Over a three-year/60,000-mile fleet life, expect it to cost £16,260 to run. The Colt is close behind and will cost £16,596, while the Ford, despite the appeal of its power, is the dearest at £16,770. Emissions and bik tax rates Mitsubishi 161g/km/19% MINI 166g/km/20% Ford 177g/km/22% SEAT 190g/km/25% A WIN for the Colt in the environmental test. With the lowest CO2 emissions it also falls into the lowest company car tax bracket of our quartet. As a result, a 22% taxpayer running the Mitsubishi can expect a monthly bill of £45. The Mini is next and will cost exactly the same. The larger engines of the Ford and Seat mean higher emissions. The Fiesta is slightly greener and will cost £54 a month, while the Seat will also cost £54 thanks to its lower price. Verdict ALTHOUGH the MINI is the cheapest to run, it just doesn’t cut it as a hot hatch. With that in mind, the obvious choice must be the Ibiza. It’s the cheapest to run after the Cooper and despite being in a higher tax bracket than the opposition, it’s only £9 a month more in company car tax than the leaders. A driver choosing the Ibiza FR as a potent small car is unlikely to be disappointed. Stranded halfway between proper hot-hatch-ness and ordinary Ibiza-ness, it felt slightly underwhelming. Now we have this diesel version, a sort of prudish sibling, which is supposed to mix fizzy hatchery with the affordability of diesel power. The two FRs fit together in the Ibiza range beneath the quicker Cupra, but it's this diesel that will account for 80 per cent of all FR sales. So does a diesel improve the FR experience? Seat isn't messing around, and has dropped in a 2.0-litre TDI with 236lb ft of torque. That makes it the smallest car in the VW empire to get this mild-mannered but thoroughly useable engine, which is capable of an impressive 61mpg. It also makes it the most powerful diesel in the supermini market. The trouble is that a diesel engine will always lack the fizz and sparkle you get from a playful petrol. You can't hang on to every gear with glazed eyes, coaxing out every single horsepower with complete tenacity. Instead, you short shift, making the most of the torque, but desperately missing a frenzy of revs.Apart from that, the FR is a fairly gratifying thing to drive quickly. The steering is quick, so it feels agile, and the electronic diff - which uses the stability control system to replicate a mechanical limited-slip diff - works hard to sling you through a corner. There's plenty of grip and it handles all that torque without fumbling around for traction.Seat estimates three-quarters of buyers will be under 30, single and living with their parents. In other words, young lads with loads of cash for novelty vodka and shouty cars. The diesel sits in insurance group eight, that's three lower than the petrol, but we'd still pay the premium for the zingy petrol to abuse on the way home from a failed date. And when you consider that the FR diesel three door costs £16,465 - £945 more than the petrol (and, curiously, just 80 quid less than the Cupra) - it starts to look like even more of a sacrifice. Ultimately, this Seat is not a bad car. The problem lies with the FR badge, which feels like a forced identity; an illusion to tempt those youthful buyers. It's forcing the idea of sportiness when what we really have here is a pleasingly capable, medium-fast, diesel hatchback with great mpg. If it just got on with being one and lost those two letters on its boot - we might have got on better. For now, we remain non-tingly.Dan Read Now share it More More Seat Ibiza cars we've driven... Seat Ibiza FR TDI first drive SEAT’s UK sales, are on a high – an all-time record year last year with 29,987 new car customers has been followed by a 36.4 per cent increase to nearly 15,000 units in the first five months of this year. An expanded SEAT business and fleet sales team is now pushing their products into areas of the new car market they haven’t really explored before being traditionally a retail brand with youngish customers with demand driven by their Touring Car successes. SEAT is the Spanish arm of the Volkswagen Group and first came to the UK market in 1985 so 2010 is the brand’s 25th anniversary here. The sporty brand now has a wide range of models to offer. There is the Leon family sized five door hatchbacks, the higher roofed Altea and Altea XL five door hatches cum MPVs, the D-segment Exeo Saloon and roomy Sports Tourer (estate) and the large Alhambra MPV. But it is the longest serving model range, the famous Ibiza with three door SC and five door versions, plus the soon to arrive ST estates, with a wide range of petrol, diesel and ECOmotive engines, at very competitive prices that still account for well over half of the brand’s UK sales and is SEAT’s best selling model range worldwide. Ibiza prices range from £9,350 on-the-road up to £17,245. Engine sizes range from aged 1.2/1.4/1.6 petrol units through to the fiery latest VW Group 1.4 TSI petrol, to 1.4 and 2.0-litre TDI but there are many versions and many states of tune ranging from 59 to 178bhp of power. To go with this power unit line-up there is a wide range of specification levels depending on the engine and body style chosen, E, S, Ecomotive, SE, Good Stuff, Sport, Sport Black, FR, Cupra and the hugely entertaining 178bhp Cupra Bocanegra. I have just had a very entertaining week driving the Ibiza 5-Door with the new FR (Formula Racing) specification powered by the impressive 2.0-litre, 141bhp TDI engine. Price is a competitive £16,840. For the potential fleet and company car customers the high performance diesel engine has low CO2 emissions of 123g/km which allows for a First Year road tax cost of £0 and then £90 for year two onwards. Benefit-in-Kind company car tax is an attractively low 13 per cent. With these figures fleet managers can no longer discourage company cars drivers from having a hot performance supermini sized car. There is no downside as far as the purchase price, road tax or BIK taxes, insurance is not prohibitive at 8E/19E. It’s still easy on the fuel - officially 60.1mpg in the Combined Cycle and 54.5mpg during my test driving covering all types of motoring. Top speed is 130mph and 0 to 62mph takes 8.2 seconds. The Ibiza FR SC three-door model is also available with this engine, price £16,430. However if petrol power is the choice then the impressive 1.4-litre, 146bhp TSI petrol engine with the twin clutch DSG auto transmission with paddle shift priced at £15,520. Top speed is 130mph, 0-62mph takes 7.7 seconds, average fuel consumption is 44.8mpg, CO2 emissions are 146g/km, VED is £125, BIK company car tax is 18% and insurance groups are 11E/22E. For me of all the FR Ibiza versions the five door, 141bhp variant, or as SEAT calls it the 2.0 TDI CR, makes the most sense because of the low taxes, much better fuel economy, the pure performance and driveability the turbodiesel unit offers and the more user-friendly five door body style. It isn’t totally perfect because fifth and sixth gear ratios are relatively high so gear changes are more frequent than I like in a diesel powered car, and in fact the car will not run smoothly below 50mph in sixth gear. With the impressive maximum torque of 236lb ft (320Nm) from 1,750rpm, in a five door hatchback of this size, there should be lots of response in high gears making it a more memorable drive. It means lots more gearchanging but the pay-offs are the low official CO2 emission figures which of course bear fruit when it comes to low taxes. Low and mid range acceleration are strong thanks to the torque, free revving and relatively quiet turbodiesel unit. Thankfully the many gear changes are slick and precise; the steering is very accurate and precise giving good feedback and loads of front end grip. On smooth motorways the ride comfort is just about OK but main and side roads with poorer surfaces and potholes bring out the worst in the ride control and comfort. Most SEAT models, sporty or not, are known to give a firm ride. The Ibiza FR is no different, worse in fact because of the faster speeds being used and the fitment of low profile tyres. In addition to the hot performance the Ibiza FR looks ‘hot’ as well, definitely it wears a sporty coat of distinctive styling extras including specific style bumpers, front honeycomb grilles with chrome surround for the main one in the centre of the face, silver coloured door mirrors, 215/40 tyres on bespoke 17-inch alloy wheels, twin exhaust pipes and FR badging. Inside it is just as sporty with a bespoke instrument display carrying the FR logo, sports steering wheel with a flat bottom to the rim, but oddly not having any steering wheel mounted controls. Sports front seats with stitched upholstery carry the FR logo. Standard specification of course includes ESP stability programme and traction control with anti-lock braking and brake assist. There are front, side, head and thorax airbags, split folding rear seat, hill hold control, electrically operated windows and heated door mirrors, a good sound system with six speakers, cruise control, trip computer, remote central door locking and low tyre pressure warning. In the front space is impressive for what is classed as a ‘supermini, Fiesta, Corsa and Peugeot 207 for example. The rear legroom is just about enough given the five door Ibiza is just over four metres in length not much shorter than a VW Golf. By choosing the five door bodystyle rather than the three door option makes this new addition a more family and business user friendly potential hot seller for SEAT. MILESTONES. SEAT Ibiza 2.0 TDI CR FR 5-Door. Price: £16,840. Engine/transmission: 2.0-ltre, four-cylinder direct injection turbodiesel, 141bhp, 236lb ft of torque from 1,750rpm, 6-speed manual.
