The boxes that needed to be ticked were: comfort; good fuel economy; looks; handling; value for money; and enough poke to shrug off the journey up and down the motorway. Firstly, the car looks absolutely stunning. Whereas most superminis nowadays tend to look a bit boring - perhaps even a tad bit forgettable - the Ibiza looks great from pretty much every angle. Certainly everyone who has seen the car likes the way it looks, and it is certainly better looking than the previous shape Fiesta and Corsa - the usual student favourites that litter the university car park. The metallic black paintwork and 16" alloy wheels as fitted on my car really shows that the car means business. On the inside, the dash looks OK. It's not as plush as the Polo this car is based on, or indeed the newer superminis around these days, but there is an air of solidity, matched with a design flair missing from its stablemates, the aforementioned Polo, and the Skoda Fabia.The car is very good at stretching your pennies. I paid £4500 for mine, which at nearly 5 years old with 38,000 miles and a full Seat service history is pretty good value. As a 20-year-old male with zero no claims, the insurance is VERY important, and in this instance is reasonable, undercutting a 1.25 Fiesta by around £80 fully comp. Other running costs are as expected for a car with a 1.4 engine - £150 for 12 months' tax, and a full tank of around £50 gives me about 480 miles - not bad at all considering how many times I have to floor it coming out of roadworks on an uphill section of road! I'm yet to find out what the servicing costs are like, as I have only had the car 7 weeks (although I have done 3000 miles in that time), but the intervals are a major service every 20K and a minor service every 10k.This brings me nicely on to what the car is like to drive. The engine is pretty decent - smooth and quiet. It has enough to keep up with the big boys on the motorway, but at the end of the day, if you want a 0-62mph time of less than 8 seconds, look elsewhere! One thing I have noticed is that under 2000rpm, the engine is pretty flat, meaning that you may find yourself dropping down a gear when you encounter a hill. This is not really a problem, as the gearbox is a pleasure to use - it is effortless to use and has a nice sense of precision, seriously lacking on the other car I looked at - a Peugeot 206. The steering is very light, but is speed sensitive, so does feel heavier at higher speeds. It is also far better than the steering in the Corsa, which seems to have a slight delay between when you turn the wheel and the assistance kicking in - a weird feeling and precisely why I don't drive my sister's. There is a reasonable feel through the wheel - not great but for a normal day-to-day car it'll do. The Sport model's larger wheels with low profile tyres, coupled with the slightly stiffer suspension set up means that the car handles well. It stays fairly level, which is reassuring. However, there are 2 minor problems with this set up. The ride around town can be quite firm, although it does ride more comfortably at speed than my father's Vectra SRi - a car designed for motorways. The other issue is that of road noise. The standard models, with narrower and higher profile tyres are quieter, but as I travel alone most days, I just turn up the stereo (which is excellent by the way). Speaking of comfort, the seats are pretty decent - there's a fair amount of adjustment, including height and reach for the steering - great for when you're six feet tall. Space in the back isn't great when front seats are all the way back, but there's so much space up front you really don't mind sitting a little bit further forward to compensate. Head room is not an issue - there's a good few inches to say the least. As mentioned above, the stereo is excellent, and the heater is remarkably quick - at least 5 times faster than my old 2002 Micra's. Air conditioning is a luxury, and I look forward to a decent summer's day to really test it out. Practicality wise, this car is pretty much standard 5-door hatchback level. A good size boot, that is quite deep, a split-fold back seat (not quite flat, but nearly there). It doesn't pull any MPV storage tricks, but then it isn't an MPV. Another minor issue I have is with the little tray used to plug the gap between the radio and the heater. The lip is too small, and it is completely flat, so there isn't really much you can put in there. I tried putting my phone in there, only for it to slide out about 30 seconds later, straight into my footwell. May be worth getting one of those rubber non-slip mats, trimming it down to size and putting it in there. Equipment levels are average - mine has air conditioning; MP3 CD player with steering wheel mounted controls; adjustable steering column; all-round headrests and 3-point seatbelts; alarm; immobilizer; remote central locking with anti-hijack (lock button inside); front electric windows and front fog lamps. Although mine missed out, later models also have electric mirrors and a height-adjustable driver's seat.Under the bonnet, this is one of the easiest cars to perform basic maintenance on. Changing a headlight bulb is supposed to be a roadside repair - ie. something you can do at the side of the road in just a few minutes. So why do so many manufacturers these days actually write in the user guide, to take the car in to the dealership to change the bulb???? Or if the bulb can be replaced by the driver, it is so inaccessible for those of us with bigger hands that the only way it gets done is with around 45 minutes of swearing. No such problem with this one - there's about 6 inches of space to work in, which is more than enough, and it takes no more than 10 minutes to change both dipped beam bulbs. The caps for screen wash and anti-freeze are colour coded, as are the oil filler cap and dipstick, which may help those who are not too savvy with cars. To sum up, if you want a car that looks good; is reasonably cheap to run; is comfortable; has a decent amount of space; is well built and handles well, go for one of these. The Seat Ibiza we have is called a "Chill" and it does have a slightly annoying sticker which says this on the side and back of the car. There is no point picking this off as it would probably not come off very easily and I am not overly bothered by it. It comes in Sport trim only, which means air-con, 16in alloy wheels and sports seats. Against It’s not as quick as the headline power figure and Sport badging would suggest – 0-60mph still takes over 10 seconds – and the harsher suspension is of questionable benefit on Britain’s pock-marked roads. But, haggle hard; you can expect to get a useful reduction from the list prices. There's a wide range of petrol and diesel engines available, including everything from the 'green' Ecomotive models to the hot FR and Cupra. However, although the handling is predictable, the car isn’t as enjoyable to drive as, say, a Ford Fiesta. The Ibiza makes up for this to an extent with a generous equipment list (even the base S trim has electric front windows, central locking and a CD player), and safety features including twin front and side airbags. The car scored a maximum five stars from Euro NCAP for crash protection.
