This latest version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged Leon Cupra, the K1, is a limited edition, and will be coming out fresh and ready for spanking new ’08 plate. The limited edition styling includes extensively re-worked front and rear bumpers, smart side skirts, spoiler and chrome-tipped central oval exhaust and is finished of nicely with a K¹ boot badge. Colour wise it’s available in Inferi Black, Emocion Red, Luna Grey and our favourite Candy White and available to order now through the SEAT UK dealer network. And it’s only a £1,000 more that the standard Cupra, bargain. If you want one you’ll be looking at £20,495 RRP and don’t forget it’s gonna be a limited being made, so you’d better order one soon. We all asked whether the hallowed Ford Focus RS could cope with 300bhp – and after driving it first on French and then British roads, we said it could. But 60bhp more? And without the trick ‘RevoKnuckle’ and limited-slip differential fitted to the fast Ford? We put on our driving socks, gloves, fireproof pants, informed our next of kin and headed out on the roads around Daventry. Revo Technik has been tuning Porsche, Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Seat models since 2002 and now has more than 300 authorised dealers worldwide. Specialising in tweaks to the engine management software, the company also offers exhaust, turbo, fuelling and suspension overhauls to help harness and further increase the potential of your car. Recognising that most customers upgrade their car in steps to suit their budget and satisfy their craving for more power; Revo offers a structured upgrade path. A simple Seat Leon Cupra remap is called ‘Stage 1’ and costs £499. ‘Stage 2’ tweaks the software to take advantage of a performance exhaust and air induction system and costs £549, while software called ‘Stage 2+’ makes use of the extra juice supplied by a high pressure fuel pump. And owners pay only the difference when upgrading, to save forking out the full software cost more than once. For the ultimate in performance ‘Stage 3’ software (£POA) enables the car to run all of the above mods and a big aftermarket turbo – resulting in a race-spec car of a very serious nature. The Revo Seat Leon Cupra in detail The Revo Leon Cupra gets its 360bhp with a Milltek exhaust, Autotech fuel pump, THS intercooler, ITG intake and ‘Stage 2+’ software. Handling is uprated over standard with lower and stiffer KW Variant 3 suspension and lightweight Team Dynamics Pro Race wheels – finished in sinister black paint. Sitting in the cleanest workshop we’ve ever seen, the white Leon looks purposeful and aggressive – with only subtle ‘Revo’ stickers, wheels and the drop in ride height making a surprisingly large difference to its demeanour. Oh, and it has an exhaust pipe which animals will nest in if you leave it parked for too long. The interior is exactly how it left Seat’s factory, with hugging seats and a sculpted steering wheel. The sound of progress But start the engine and crows in nearby trees take flight. There is a deep throb and bellow from the exhaust and some seriously interesting whistles from behind the dashboard. As you start to squeeze the accelerator (you don’t floor a front-wheel drive car with this much power unless your surname is Stig) there is a gargle and then a hiss as the turbo starts spinning. Acceleration builds from a hot hatch surge into a supercar avalanche as the noise from the exhaust takes over from the high-pitched whistle and its time for another gear. Press the clutch and there is a flutter from the uprated turbo recirculation valve and pops from the exhaust until the next ratio slots home and you’re off down the road even faster than before. There are few cars which can overtake like the Revo Leon Cupra – simply sneak up behind the truck/van/sports car in question, wait for an empty stretch of road and select fourth gear. When a publication recently timed the Revo for a group test it hit 60mph in 5.7 seconds and reached 140mph from a standstill almost ten seconds quicker than the Ford Focus RS. We were lucky with the weather, and the roads were dry and grippy – yet even with maximum traction acting on the wheels and suspension there was surprisingly little torque steer during our test. Accelerate hard from rest and rather than feeling the steering wheel wrench from side to side, it stays straight and true, with wheelspin when the power overcomes grip. But, spinning wheels obviously limit speed and could prove costly in the long run. Thankfully there is a saving grace – the throttle has been so progressively set up it’s easy to balance power on the threshold of grip in first and second gear and then flatten the pedal in third. You can achieve the traction generated by a Focus RS or Megane R26.R, but it takes a lot more delicacy with your right foot. Is it just fast in a straight line? The standard Leon Cupra is no slouch in the bends, and fitted with KW suspension the Revo car produces even more lateral G-force with less body roll. There is no slack in the suspension, which can bob up and down at low speeds and under power, but thanks to excellent damping is rarely uncomfortable and smoothes bumps well. Our only criticism is with the standard Seat steering, which feels too light and doesn’t provide enough information about the road. It’s precise, but you have to trust it as you turn into a corner, rather than rely on the information at your fingertips. While few drivers will venture into the extremes of its handling envelope, it’s also less adjustable and precise than the Focus RS and Megane R26.R on the limit. The Leon is an older design than the two latest super-hatches, and the fact it runs them close is a massive achievement. Initially we were surprised the brakes had been left standard – this Leon has 60 per cent more power than stock after all – and we were impressed they stood up to abuse well. The front setup on the Cupra is shared with the heavier Mk.5 Golf R32 with its V6 engine and four-wheel drive and seem beefy enough for road and track use. It’s easy to build up a pace and you really need to keep an eye on the speedometer to avoid straying over the speed limit. Performance bargain of the century Few cars give you a grin as broad as the Revo Seat Leon Cupra. It might not be the ultimate handling hot hatch, but it’s definitely the most incredible when you put your foot down. If everyone owned one of these, ticket sales at theme parks around the country would dry up overnight as rollercoaster’s just wouldn’t seem that exciting anymore. The fact you can pick up a used Leon Cupra for around £12k and fit all the modifications on our car for less than £3k, also makes the Revo package the performance bargain of the century.
