The 1.6-litre petrol is most popular, and is an effective engine, albeit throbby and in need of revving. Diesels are rightly popular, and the 2.0-litre TDI is rattly but otherwise impressive. Not so the ageing 1.9-litre TDI, which is lethargic when accelerating. Around town, the sudden power delivery can also make it hard to drive. However, all Leons are blessed with agile handling. Steering is particularly good, with ample feedback making it involving to drive. It’s also responsive and agile, boasting good levels of grip and minimal body roll. Brake feel impresses too – even the five- and six-speed gearboxes are positive and snappy. But as with most SEATs, the ride is pretty firm and can become a little uncomfortable around town and on rutted surfaces. It’s better on the motorway, but there is noticeable road noise. MarketplaceThe SEAT is based on the latest VW Golf platform, but there’s no hint of the Golf’s boxy proportions in the curvaceous design. The Spanish company actually refers to the Leon as a five-door coupe, and you can see why. The hidden rear door handles, along with a low roofline, give it a sporty appearance, while the front is dominated by the large, rounded grille and that unique bonnet design. Its distinctive shape is further enhanced by the slab sides and arching swage line that runs from the headlights right down to the rear wheelarches. This means even standard Reference and Stylance models look sporty, though it does make the faster FR versions a bit harder to spot. Naturally, sister company Skoda has a similarly-priced alternative Golf-based model – the Octavia – and competition also comes from the Kia cee’d, Ford Focus, Hyundai i30, Vauxhall Astra and Citroen C4. OwningAs you’d expect from a VW Group product, fit and finish are excellent. However, out test car did develop a rattly gearbox, something we’ve experienced in other Leons. The plastics are a little harsh too. Stull, the rest of the cabin is well laid out, while the dials are easy to read. It has a good driving position too, with ample adjustment in the chair and steering column. However, visibility is a problem – thick A-pillars make pulling out of tight junctions tricky, while rearward visibility isn’t great, either. Room in the gloomy rear is fine, but the boot has a high lip – and the rear bench doesn’t flip up, so you can’t create a flat load space. SEAT hopes very competitive pricing helps buyers overlook this; it’s great value, particularly when you consider the very generous levels of standard equipment featured in all models. Fuel economy is generally very good too, particularly with diesel models. It concentrates on providing VW-bred technology with a dash of Spanish sunshine and produces some fine products, especially the Leon, a roomy, Golf-sized hatch that lends itself to some interesting engine options.The Leon line-up features 10 models ranging in price from £11,300 to £17,500. They come in a choice of four trim levels with 1.9 and 2.0 diesels or 1.6 and 2.0 petrol engined options.The near range-topping 2.0 TDI Sport which tips the price scale at £15,195.It has to be said that at this price, the diesel Leon Sport has a tremendous amount of opposition out there. But it is without doubt a class act. SEATs of the past pale into insignificance when compared with this car.Star of the show is the amazing VW two-litre TDI engine which in this guise whacks out 140PS. It gives brisk performance with a 125mph top speed and 0-62mph acceleration of 9.3 seconds.But the big secret is this car's economy figure. On the combined cycle it returns 49.6mpg. But on test I found it could easily top the 52mpg barrier.In a world of rising fuel costs, common sense says you have to temper performance with economy and the Volkswagen PD or 'pumpe duse' diesel is an ideal engine to go with.Matched to a six-speed gearbox it makes the Leon Sport probably one of the most economical cars of its size available.Specification is impressive with a lot of airbags and stability control, alloys, air conditioning, powered mirrors and front windows.Another plus is the fact that the Leon is very roomy with excellent appeal to the family driver.One thing I was not totally happy about was the positioning of the exterior rear door handles. SEAT has gone down the route of making them part of the door window frame assembly.But because of the way the Leon's rear door is made the handle requires a hefty scallop out of the window frame assembly and quite honestly it does the sweeping lines of the Leon no favours.A conventional rear door handle would make the styling of this car more cohesive.But this unusual feature is all part of the Leon approach to life. It makes a firm statement of its own, almost shouting that it is an individual model and not a recycled VW.The Leon is very easy to drive although rear visibility is somewhat restricted when parking.The hatchback reveals a generous loadspace with a minimum capacity of more than 340 litres.
