Ripping up the stylebook and replacing angular lines for swooping curves, Seat has a real identity on the road. But while some manufacturers have been criticised for being unique, it is Seat’s biggest selling point; combining sensibilities with real flair and passion. 1. Looks 7/10 Of all of the brands in the Volkswagen Group, Seat is the most recognisable. With its Spanish flair, the Ibiza is able to appeal to young and old alike – it certainly looks and feels more dynamic than the VW Polo and Skoda Fabia with which it shares its DNA. Seat’s design team must have run out of rulers when sketching the Ibiza, as there’s barely a straight line on the car – curves are most certainly the order of the day. It’s well proportioned and there’s an excellent attention to detail: the Seat badge lifts to double as the boot handle, and the rear lights wouldn’t look out of place on a supercar. 2. Looks inside 6/10 The Seat’s Spanish flair continues inside. Despite being swathed in acres of plastic the dash is full of curves and is a reasonably pleasant thing to be sat in front of. The centre console is even angled towards the driver, which makes it feel more of a driver’s car. Unusually for an around-town hack, the Ibiza had a chunky feeling steering wheel which you can get a decent grip on should you want to throw the car about. Our test car had quite a bit of wind noise through the driver’s side window and door, although this could be an isolated case. 3. Practicality 7/10 Decent storage space is vital in a supermini, as they tend to be practical workhorses first and toys second. There was plenty of space in the cabin to store oddments, a glovebox big enough to lose several pairs of gloves in and plenty of cubby holes. The obligatory fancy cup holders completed the picture up front. The boot was more than big enough for a big trip to Tesco, and the rear seats fold 60:40. The only real cause for concern was the sloping roofline, which could cause hassle for taller drivers. 4. Ride and Handling 7/10 The ride and handling is focused on comfort rather than performance – there’s the hot Cupra model for that. The Seat Ibiza can waft along the road, and is only troubled by particularly scarred surfaces. There was plenty of road noise at speed, which was surprising given the fairly high profile tyres, which can help to dampen the sound. The light steering feels nice and light around town, aiding manoeuvring in tight spaces, but it doesn’t ‘weight up’ to provide feedback at speed. We also found the clutch pedal travel overly long, which caused aching legs on long runs and extended urban commutes. 5. Performance 8/10 Again, performance isn’t this 1.4 diesel’s forte, but it can show a surprising turn of speed when needed. A power figure of just 80bhp belies the Ibiza’s acceleration figures. It’ll get to 60mph in 12.9 seconds and reach 109mph flat out; but it’s the mid-range punch that really impresses. From 1,800rpm to around 4,000, there’s enough urge in all five gears to make overtaking simple. Couple this with a claimed 61.9mpg figure (we averaged slightly less, at around 55mpg) and it’s a very impressive all-rounder. 6. Running Costs 7/10 Weighing in at under £10k, this Ibiza is good value for money; if you are planning to keep it for a long time. This is because Seats have the worst depreciation of any brand in the Volkswagen group. Of course, this does make them an excellent used prospect. Fuel bills will suit even the most cost-conscious motorist, and a group 4 insurance rating is very affordable. All Seats come with a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty (two years manufacturer cover, and one year dealer cover), a 12 year corrosion warranty and 24 months worth of European breakdown cover. Servicing is relatively pocket-pleasing, with a major service due every 20,000 miles, with a minor on each 10,000 mile mark. 7. Reliability 8/10 Another area where the Ibiza scores well is reliability. Seat comes fifth in the Reliability Index, in terms of frequency and cost of repairs. Interestingly, it does much better than Volkswagen and Skoda. Our test car felt solidly built and was free from rattles. 8. Safety 8/10 Our 1.4 Reference test car came with driver and passenger airbags, but lacked the £319 side and curtain airbags which only feature as standard on the FR and Cupra performance models. The passenger ‘bag can be deactivated should a child seat be installed in the front. ABS comes as standard across the range, as does a collapsible steering column and a brake pedal that will break to avoid damaging the driver’s legs in the event of a crash. The Ibiza scored an excellent four stars for occupant protection in the EuroNCAP crash test programme, and is above average for pedestrian protection. 9. Equipment 6/10 Our entry-level Reference model came with enough kit for the average driver. Electric front windows, remote central locking and a radio/CD player; but the mirrors have to be moved via an adjuster on the doors and air-con was strangely absent. Swap diesel power for petrol and you’ll get climate control on the Stylance, the next model up which is only available as a petrol. The next diesel comes in the 1.9 Sport, along with a range of racy accoutrements. Sat-nav isn’t available on any model, even as an option. 10. X-Factor 7/10 There’s no shortage of cheap superminis these days, but the Ibiza is one of the few with a funky edge. But unlike some other Euro hatches, it’s screwed together properly, and feels like a car you could want to live with for a long time. First there was the dynamic Vauxhall Astra, and then Citroen stunned everyone with its bold C4. Now, SEAT's new Leon has landed in the UK - and it looks set to make an equally big impression. The Spanish company is actually referring to its new model as a five-door coupί¿½, a description that's not entirely misleading. A low roofline - along with Alfa Romeo-style rear door handles hidden in the C-pillars - helps give the Leon a long, lean look to complete the maker's three-car line-up. That's why the newcomer's nose is so familiar, as this design has already been seen on the Altea and Toledo. The cabin is equally distinctive, with a more sporting driving environment than those of other compact family cars. Yet there is nothing wrong with the interior headroom or seating position, either - only the centre console draws criticism. While the layout and instrument clarity are pleasing, the expanse of bare plastic looks odd and the quality of the materials is not outstanding. And although there is plenty of room in the rear, the boot lip is high, so it is less user-friendly than some rivals. Under the bonnet, five engines will initially be available. The 1.9 and 2.0-litre diesels are familiar, as are the 1.6 and 2.0 FSI petrol units. The flagship uses the Golf GTI's 2.0T FSI, but here it is detuned to 182bhp. However, there are rumours of a possible hot 230bhp Cupra arriving next year. It should be an enticing prospect, because even in 1.6 Reference trim as tested here - one of five spec levels offered - the Leon is fun to drive. The 101bhp engine is not in the first flush of youth; neither economy nor emissions are particularly impressive. But performance is respectable, and the five-speed gearbox shifts neatly. SEAT's engineers have adjusted the Golf-derived suspension to deliver a sporty feel, making the Leon agile and responsive. It is well balanced, although let down slightly by light steering. However, our biggest gripe is the lack of refinement. The ride is firm and the cabin relatively noisy; both the Ford Focus and Citroen C4 would be better propositions for offering comfort over long distances. Still, neither of these rivals can match the SEAT's value for money. Prices start at ΂£11,295, with diesels available from ΂£12,995. In terms of MPG I can get as high as 45 and as low as 33, it really depends on the road conditions and traffic. I usually cover 370-400 miles on £45 worth of petrol. Its not that thirsty compared to similar 1.6 models. In conclusion id say you can't really go wrong with this car, ive had mine for a year and a half now and its been bullet proof. But I liked this car, so would be brave. We were quite confident we would be buying a petrol car, so took that out. Had a quite nice drive for 20 minutes, then back to garage. The sales man then said, try the diesel, so we took that out. It was fantastic. Very keen, very smooth gear changes, nippy. Loved it. It was just as powerful as the 2.0Lt petrol. Went back to the garage, Husband quite impressed with me for liking his 1st choice and the fact I drove it! Went to another couple of dealerships to look at the other cars in the shortlist. But I won't bore you, I simply wasn't impressed. So, back to Seat garage we went and bought a brand new Seat Altea 2.0 TDI Sport. Now you want to know about the car itself. I bought the car after it had an excellent review in one of the motoring magazines. I wanted air-con and a good size boot. I was also impressed by the fact that Seat and VW are virtually the same cars, but Seats are cheaper! I have now owned my car for nearly 3.5 years and done 45k miles. It's been a virtually trouble free period - in that time I have "broken" 1 fuse, the windscreen has 1 chip in it (but not in the MOT-critical region) and I have had 1 puncture. Whilst the VW Sharan and Ford Galaxy sister models have sold well in their own right, theres no doubt the smart money gets sent on the SEAT. Badgework and cosmetics apart, it's identical in design to Ford and VWs two market leaders, rolling down the same Portuguese production lines. If youre campaigning on price, it makes sense to get the biggest bang for your buck and that comes in the shape of the entry-level 2.0 Reference, priced at just £16,422. Anybody expecting a seven seater this well built for £16,500 could reasonably expect it to be stripped of every conceivable extra, an exercise the industry terms decontenting. Whilst the Alhambra 2.0 Reference cant claim to offer a huge selection of extras, it does include air conditioning a must when youve got this amount of glazing five removable seats, three-point seat belts all round, electric front windows, CD player and a six-speed gearbox. Anti-lock brakes are fitted as standard as well as twin front and side airbags, ISOFIX child seat fixings, an immobiliser and an alarm. Hardly stripped to the bone is it? There are also options like ESP (an Electronic Stability Programme that will automatically apply the brakes and reduce the throttle to get you out of trouble if you enter a corner too fast) or, more practically, a fridge. "Alhambra residual values are consistently some of the industrys best"The current second generation model holds much the same appeal as the old - though arguably, has more of its own personality, thanks to the adoption of SEAT's trademark 'nostril' front grille. This doesnt do much for the Alhambras looks but at least it gives the car a bit of extra family identity. Black framing around the clear-lensed front headlamps is the only other cosmetic difference over the Spanish car's VW and Ford counterparts. Inside, the rather plasticky feel of the original model has been replaced by a more up-market atmosphere, with better quality plastics, a new steering wheel and nicer switchgear that leaves room for the obligatory optional satellite navigation system. More practical improvements include retractable cupholders, extra map pockets in the doors and a pair of useful lidded cubbyholes on top of the dash. This plusher atmosphere is important, for cheap and cheerful MPV customers are increasingly opting for mini-MPVs like Renault's Scenic. Large models like the Alhambra must increasingly compete with executive cars. On the road, you have a car that not only costs around the same as a mid-range family estate but also measures in at about the same length, taking up no more space on the tarmac. Behind the wheel, it's exactly like a medium range estate - only better, thanks to that high-seated driving position and the glassy cabin. The biggest surprises, however, are reserved for the handling. This MPV doesn't roll, pitch or wallow like many of its rivals. Nor do you need a period of acclimatisation before you can drive it quickly, as you would, for example, with a fashionable four-wheel drive. Performance from the 115bhp engine is relatively leisurely, the Alhambra getting to 60mph in 15.2 seconds on the way to a respectable top speed of 110mph. If you feel the urge for a little more power, youll need to shell out £18,712 for a 2.0TDi140 Reference. Fuel economy for the 2.0 Reference is good at an average of 29mpg, although this will take a dip if you load the car to the gunwales. Having been voted Used MPV of The Year 2003 by Used Car Buyer magazine, its also highly unlikely youll get your fingers burnt when you choose to sell it on. The two front seats on some models can be swivelled round completely to face the rear - which is great for picnics and business meetings if you're stationary and there's only four in the car. It's annoying however, that you still can't do the same with the middle set so that occupants behind the driver can face each other and talk on longer journeys. Given that £16,422 will only buy a mid-range Renault Scenic a car that competes in the next size class down the SEAT Alhambra 2.0 Reference has to be seen as an outrageous bargain. We all like unearthing something thats a bit of a steal but we dont like to be seen to be economising.
